Why is refresher training so important

After retiring in 2019, I transitioned into the contract security industry. It quickly became clear that while many licensed professionals complete the required 40-hour training program, too many enter the field without the practical skills and confidence needed to perform effectively.

I also noticed a gap in professionalism and preparedness. When asked straightforward questions about standard security procedures, responses were often unclear or incomplete—highlighting the need for continued, real-world training beyond initial certification.

Why Ongoing Training Matters

Security is not a static profession. Continuous training ensures professionals remain capable, credible, and ready to respond. Key benefits include:

Evolving threat readiness
Crime methods, risks, and response protocols change over time. Ongoing training ensures security professionals can adapt and respond effectively.

Legal and regulatory compliance
Security personnel must operate within provincial regulations such as Ontario’s PSISA, as well as workplace safety standards including WHMIS and applicable codes. Regular training helps ensure full compliance.

Skill reinforcement
Core competencies—such as patrol procedures, report writing, emergency response, and use-of-force principles—can fade without practice. Refresher training reinforces these critical skills.

Confidence and professionalism
Well-trained professionals carry themselves with confidence, communicate clearly, and perform their duties with authority and precision.

Technology proficiency
Modern security increasingly relies on tools such as CCTV systems, access control platforms, and digital reporting software. Ongoing training ensures personnel stay current and capable.

Stronger teamwork and communication

Training is crucial for security professionals, as the role is dynamic and constantly evolving with new laws and technologies.

Security is a dynamic profession, shaped by changing laws, emerging technologies,
and evolving risks. Continuous training is not optional—it is essential.

If you have been working in the security field for six months or longer and want to sharpen your skills, I have identified key areas of improvement designed to elevate your effectiveness, confidence, and professionalism on the job.

  Those selected key items ...

Situation Awareness

1

I am a certified Situational Awareness Specialist with a strong focus on helping security professionals avoid “tunnel vision” on the job. In real-world environments, conditions can change in seconds, making constant awareness of one’s surroundings essential to identifying potential threats early.

A core principle I teach is the OODA Loop—Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. This proven framework helps security professionals process information quickly, make sound decisions under pressure, and respond effectively as situations evolve. By mastering situational awareness and disciplined decision-making, security professionals become more confident, proactive, and prepared to act when it matters most.

Importance of a memo book

2

Using a memo book is a fundamental part of professional security work.
Proper use ensures clear, accurate, and complete documentation of observations, incidents, and actions taken during a shift.

Security professionals should never rely on memory alone. Timely, written notes protect both the officer and the client by creating an accurate record of events. In this training, we cover what information belongs in your memo book, how to maintain clear and professional entries, and the habits that lead to reliable documentation. We will also review 10 common memo book mistakes—and how to avoid them—so your notes stand up to scrutiny when it matters most. 1. No Time or Date Always record exact times and dates for every entry. 2. Vague Descriptions Avoid unclear notes like "did patrol" or "everything normal." 3. Missing Names or Descriptions Record names, ID numbers, or detailed physical descriptions. 4. Unprofessional Language Do not use slang, insults, or emotional wording. 5. Personal Opinions Stick to facts you observe—never assumptions. 6. Incomplete Event Details Every entry should include actions taken and the final outcome. 7. Speculation Write only what you see, hear, or are told—no guessing. 8. Hard-to-Read Entries Use clear handwriting or clean digital entries with proper grammar. 9. Deferred Writing Record events as close to the time they happen as possible. 10. Blank Spaces Never leave empty space—draw a line to prevent later alteration.

Review of crisis management protocols and emergency procedures

3

In an emergency, a security professional’s role is simple and critical: assess quickly, act decisively, and protect lives. This means securing the scene, contacting emergency services, providing aid when needed, and maintaining control until the situation is resolved.

We will go over the details of the fire plan and other emergency procedures, such as bomb threats and active assailant situations to enhance your preparedness.

4

Professional appearance also strengthens your company’s reputation by demonstrating consistent grooming and uniform standards. Wearing a complete, properly fitted uniform clearly identifies authority and responsibility—especially in emergency situations where clarity and trust matter most. There are three key attributes stand out: ✅ Cleanliness A well-groomed security professional projects authority, confidence, and respect. Appearance is part of deterrence and also reassures employees, clients, and visitors of an organised, professional security culture. ✅ Discipline Discipline underpins all aspects of security. From following SOPs to responding calmly under pressure, disciplined officers maintain control, consistency, and credibility in every situation. ✅ Punctuality Timeliness ensures continuity. A late security professional leaves gaps in coverage, creating avoidable risks. Punctuality demonstrates reliability, respect for duty, and commitment to protecting people and assets. Security isn’t just about safeguarding—it’s about embodying professionalism through the way professionals present themselves and perform their duties. Take a moment to assess your uniform and ensure it meets these standards.

Maintaining a professional appearance on duty is essential. It reflects discipline, pride in your role, and respect for the people you serve. A well-presented security professional immediately projects confidence and reliability, helping the public and clients feel safe.

Patrolling

5

As a security professional on patrol, it's crucial keep your mission in mind: to deter, detect, delay and deny while reassuring your client that you are performing at your best.

We will go over the purpose of patrolling with you and the significance of this role. We will discuss the necessary steps to take before and during your patrol to ensure you are well-prepared. We will also review what equipment you should carry with you when going on a patrol. Security patrols should be methodically thought out and designed as part of a complete security program.

6

What equipment a security person should have when working

Over the years, I’ve seen many security professionals arrive for duty unprepared. Preparation is not optional—it is a core part of professionalism and effective performance.

Every security professional should arrive on site with a properly stocked duty bag. At a minimum, this should include items such as extra pens and a notepad, a flashlight with spare batteries, a basic first aid kit, measuring tools, latex or protective gloves, a cell phone charger, Kevlar gloves, a safety vest, additional PPE, and a multi-tool. Security personnel should also assess whether body armor is appropriate for their specific site and assignment. When body armor is required by company policy, it must be worn as directed. Being properly equipped ensures readiness, safety, and the ability to respond effectively when conditions change. We will also review with you,  some of the necessary equipment that you should carry while on shift.

Job Description and it's importance

7

A job description is extremely important for a security professional because it serves as both a roadmap and a shield for your work.

Defines Duties and Expectations Clearly outlines what tasks you are responsible for—such as patrolling, monitoring cameras, writing reports, or responding to incidents. Helps avoid confusion about what is and isn’t your responsibility. We will review your job description to ensure that you understand what your duties are

Qualities of a well written report

8

A well-crafted report—particularly in professional or security settings—exhibits several essential qualities that enhance its clarity, effectiveness, and utility.

Here are the key characteristics of an effective report that we will review with you to ensure your reports are well written and looking professional. Clarity:   Report should be easily understandable, utilizing straightforward language free from jargon or ambiguity. Accuracy:  All data, statistics, and observations must be correct and precise avoiding any assumptions or guesses. Conciseness:  Report should be succinct including only relevant information and omitting unnecessary details.   Objectivity: It should be factual and impartial, presenting information without personal opinions or emotional language.   Completeness: The report must include all necessary details to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic, ensuring no points are overlooked.    Professional Tone:   Maintain a formal and respectful tone suitable for the audience and context.                         “The strength of your report writing techniques is the strength of your professionalism.”

5 Minute Trainer

9

We will go over some the topics listed below, which can serve as discussion points with fellow security professionals:

Handling workplace conflicts Effective time management Common security misconceptions Non-verbal communication The impact of poor posture on security Crime scene procedures The role of Security versus negligence Most of these topics can be presented via email followed by a brief discussion. These topics are intended to reinforce the working knowledge that licensed security professionals should already possess.

Tactical Communication

10

Tactical communication is the deliberate use of words, tone, and presence to influence behavior, reduce risk, and maintain control during security incidents.

In practice, it means communicating calmly and confidently to de-escalate situations, guide behavior, and keep people safe—often preventing issues from escalating before physical intervention is required.

We will review some core principles, listening techniques, clear instructions, body language and approach skills to better prepare you for the unexpected
